A Practitioner's site: From static brochure to commercial vehicle

As new design trends develop, an 'old' website that looks good and suits its purpose can acquire a classic charm. However, there may be compelling business reasons to upgrade.

Firstly, having regular new content is increasingly important – for visibility in Search Engine listings and to maintain interest amongst your customers. A modern user-friendly Content Management System will allow you to keep your presentation up-to-date, without having to wait for an expensive specialist to do it for you.

Secondly, techniques and expectations have developed. What was standard practice 5-10 years ago may not be so efficient today – or even display properly on modern systems. For example, 'flash' intros, 'wacky' designs or extra-wide layouts.

In particular, clear and informative navigation is crucial. As is human- and SE-friendly, 'scannable' text.

Thirdly, your own business has developed and should reflect your present quality, visually and functionally: i.e. a more integrated design, with more interaction. And it's a good opportunity to review content thoroughly.

The new model site for Licht In Schaduw (licht-in-schaduw.nl) was built with the above in mind. The existing site was analysed and a PDF proposal with designs made. This was developed on a test server and launched just in time for the transformational year of 2012 – and the joomla Open Source framework enables an upgrade path well into the future.

Important keywords for the new design: personal, transformational, friendly, spiritual, energizing.

Key new functions include a session booking form and an (easy to update) agenda.

Other improvements included a design to better harmonize with the concept-logo, (‘Light in Shadow"), paying special attention to color, softness, whiteness and vibrancy; a home page to define and generate interest in the products; clear, visually defined product pages; action buttons; the creation of a localized banner image with strapline; a 'footer' module with small but important information…

The total development cost of such a new vehicle is usually under 1,000 euros, including all planning, original designs, normal amendments rounds and custom user manual.
